This Saturday sees former bantamweight champion Holly Holm taking on rising contender, Irene Aldana on Fight Island. The winner of this bout will find themselves fighting Amanda Nunes for a chance at the bantamweight championship, probably…
Holly Holm last fought for the title in July 2019 when she challenged Amanda Nunes at UFC 239. Nunes beat Holm when she head-kicked the american in round 1 to secure the KO victory. Since then, Holly won 1 fight against Raquel Pennington back in January where she earned a 3 round decision.
Irene Aldana’s last bout was a thing of beauty. She knocked out Kettlen Vieira back last December with a sharp left hook. Her boxing ability was on full display as she looks to be improving significantly on her feet.
Holm vs Aldana: Our pick…
Holly Holm is a world class kick boxer with a lot of fight experience, her stand up is some of the best in the division. However, age is not on her side as the former title holder is now 38. To add to this, she looked lackluster in January against Pennington. Despite her age, Holm is in phenomenal condition (as she always has been) so the only concern would be how the reflexes and sharpness of Holm are holding up.
Holly Holm is going to need to be as sharp as ever against the ever-improving Irene Aldana. The Mexican looked to have mastered her stand up game in her last bout against Vieira so any improvements in that 10 month period would be scary to think about. You can probably tell who our pick is for this fight, and we are not over hyping the technical ability of Aldana. She manages spaces perfectly and she has developed legit knockout power through honing of her technique.
The women’s UFC bantamweight division is in desperate need for new blood as Nunes has ran through the entire division. Irene Aldana is the perfect place to start. Huge Mexican fanbase, technically proficient and can knock people out!
Regardless of outcome, this fight will be a stand up battle between two of the best in the world.
